Project Overview

Night Market Cleveland is a celebration of the diverse community, culture, and creativity within Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood. Once a neglected side street, this space is now a vibrant, open-air market that comes alive with energy, sounds, and flavors each summer night. SOS led this project from creative inception through to implementation, transforming an underutilized street into an engaging pop-up market filled with food, art, and performances. With a whimsical, unconventional atmosphere, Night Market Cleveland brings people together in an immersive space that reflects the spirit of AsiaTown.

The Challenge

Turning a rundown side street into a bustling pop-up market required a vision that blended design, community engagement, and logistical planning. The challenge was to create an inviting and functional space that balanced crowd flow, vendor placements, and interactive elements while highlighting the cultural richness of AsiaTown. Additionally, the event was conceived as a predevelopment activation—a way to demonstrate the street’s potential for long-term use and development. SOS needed to create a memorable experience that would draw visitors and ultimately spark interest in further development of the area.

Creative Event Planning and Space Transformation

From the beginning, SOS envisioned Night Market Cleveland as a way to reimagine the space as a hub of community activity. We designed every detail with the goal of creating an immersive, whimsical environment that offered something new at every corner. String lights, art installations, and bold signage turned the street into a visually captivating space that invited exploration and discovery. The layout was strategically planned to accommodate both high foot traffic and spontaneous moments of interaction. Vendor stalls, food trucks, and artisan booths were arranged to allow easy navigation, while open spaces were reserved for roaming performers and street buskers. This layout balanced functionality with a sense of flow, making it feel like an organic, bustling marketplace.

Curating a Unique Cultural Experience

SOS curated an experience that blended traditional and contemporary elements of Asian culture, making Night Market Cleveland a unique destination for locals and tourists alike. The event featured Asian fusion food stalls, artisan vendors, and an eclectic mix of local makers, all chosen to reflect the diversity of AsiaTown. Roaming performers and street musicians added a playful, spontaneous energy, creating memorable moments that encouraged visitors to stay, explore, and engage.

In addition to food and performances, interactive art installations offered a hands-on component that encouraged community connection. With Night Market Cleveland, SOS applied a strategic approach, using the event as a predevelopment activation that would reveal the potential of an otherwise overlooked street. Through careful planning and execution, we demonstrated how the space could serve as a vibrant community hub, encouraging city stakeholders and developers to envision long-term
possibilities for the area. By showcasing the street’s capacity to host high-foot-traffic events,
Night Market Cleveland became a model for sustainable development in AsiaTown, highlighting how placemaking could drive community engagement and inspire future growth.

To bring this concept to life, SOS coordinated all aspects of event logistics, from vendor setup to performance scheduling and security. We managed every detail, ensuring a seamless experience for both vendors and attendees. The team carefully monitored crowd flow and
optimized vendor placements to accommodate peak traffic, transforming the street into a lively,
well-organized space that was both safe and engaging.

The SOS Solution:

At SOS, we thrive in moments like this. Challenges don’t stop us—they spark innovation. We knew the goal: preserve the market’s spirit while keeping everyone safe. Our first step? A complete reimagination of the market’s layout, designed not just for safety, but for connection in a new form. Instead of barriers and “keep out” signs, we embraced a playful design. Chalk art turned pathways into whimsical trails that encouraged social distancing in a fun, non-intimidating way. Bright, colorful markers guided visitors through the market while maintaining the friendly, welcoming atmosphere people loved.

 

To make shopping easier and safer, we introduced a click-and-collect system. Visitors could pre-order their produce and goods, then swing by for a quick, contactless pick-up. This not only kept things moving smoothly but gave customers peace of mind—shopping locally without the worry.

 

We didn’t stop there. SOS also helped coordinate socially distanced live music performances and spaced-out cooking demonstrations, transforming the market into a lively experience while keeping everyone safe and sound.
